I have a copy of this single. Though text on the record label dates it as 1980, text on an insert reveals the record to have actually been released in January 1981. This text, which wraps around the edges of the insert (and around a couple of images) reads as follows:

yeah Micah played in a couple of country groups including the Lazy J's and passed away at 41 years old in 2011. Bassist Tim White plays in the Alkalai Flats. The drummer Scott Miller plays in the Bananas, the Bright Ideas, and English Singles. There's a super-detailed article about the Tiki Men (and it comes with a 45rpm record) in Yeti Magazine, 2012.

I saw the Bangs before they had a 45 out, at a hole in the wall in North Hollywood called "The Rock Orphanage" on a Sunday night, had to be summer 1979. Their original bassist, Annette had graduated from our high school that year and she was very cool, a friend. And y'know what? THEY SMOKED! They weren't merely aping garage (before it was marketed as "Garage"). They embodied that entire sixties fuzz and harmonies thing...with total conviction: it was who they were. They did nearly all covers, including a knock-you-on-yer-ass cover of the Turtles' "Outside Chance." No average Sunday night, that one.

good article. I interviewed them a couple of times for me zine (along with the Humpers, Red Aunts and a bunch of early '90s LA-Long Beach bands). I wouldn't exactly call them a bar rock band...there 1995 masterpiece "Ragged Soul" is one of the best CDs from the '90s. After they lost original guitarist D.D. Weekday things seemed to go south...

Hey, Zontar - I was at all those shows you describe - the developmentally challenged "guest singer" was one of the most amazing things I ever saw in my life. As I recall, the sound was not going well that evening - it happens sometimes - and Girls were getting very frustrated playing their own usual stuff - So Robin, who worked with the developmentally challenged and had set up for a group to be bused to the show - invited this one guy he worked with who was a huge Elvis fan. It was probably one of the best moment's in the guest singer's life and was incredibly moving - turned a show that was not going well into something amazing.

The Girls are quite simply the best Boston band of the punk era. They, along with Human Sexual Response were the house bands of The Punkt Data Gallery (an artist collective of crazy young mostly Mass Art students). The Girls had connections with The Museum School, the other big Boston Art School. Being a media student at Mass Art and a founding member of Punkt Data I had a lot of dealings with this band. When the Girls played our gallery in the North End they were so loud the cops broke it up. Later I produced 2 shows of them at the Longwood Theater at Mass Art. One was a rock show the other a "performance art" venue. Predictable they did a straight rock show for the art show and went wild at the art show. A highlight was the developmentally challenged fellow who guest sang a cover of Elvis' "Teddy Bear". They also played at our extravaganza at The Boston Architectural Center, but unfortunately, got screwed because of the incompetence of one of our members. They had the biggest house but got only a fraction of the money due them because of a deal made with a band who were not as good, but had a manager.

I saw the Weasels at UCLA Mardi Gras in the spring on 1978 and then again at the Whisky on a weeknight. (What was my mom thinking?)

In addition to the excellent tunes mentioned here, they also had a song called "Switchblade Love" that the guitarist played using a switchblade rather than a pick.

The prop rake used on stage had its teeth painted silver with red (blood) on the tips. The handle was covered in black electric tape and then wrapped with the kind of chain you would lock your bike up with.

They were more glam than punk, but I don't think they cared so long as fans came. They rocked hard. The crowd loved it and sang the chorus of Beat Her With a Rake with lusty abandon.
